Prometheus
In a season devoted to Myths, Martin Harriague continues his exploration of transgressive figures who defy gods and norms. After his creation inspired by Donald J. Trump, he now summons Prometheus, who dared to steal fire from the gods to give it to humankind, an act of rebellion and generosity punished by eternal suffering.
Beyond the ancient tale, this new piece asks what “stealing fire” means today: in a world where humans claim the power to control and destroy, Prometheus does not steal the flame to annihilate, but to offer humankind the very source of knowledge, of life, and… of love.
The Creatures of Prometheus, Beethoven’s only ballet, lies at the heart of this new creation, which marks the long-awaited return of the Orchestre national Avignon-Provence alongside the Ballet. A reunion in which musicians and dancers share the same space. This proximity gives the music back its full physical presence.
For Martin Harriague, this intimate relationship between movement and sound is a true signature: dance does not follow the music, it is music. Bodies translate the notes and make visible what we hear. The choreography combines powerful ensembles, sensitive duets and virtuoso solos, with the explosive and precise writing that makes the choreographer unique.
Composer Fabien Cali, in residence with the Orchestra, enriches Beethoven’s score with a contemporary dimension, extending the dialogue between music and movement, between heritage and invention.
Prometheus thus stands as a total work: musical, choreographic and mythical.

Press
Concertclassic – 15 December 2025: “Martin Harriague is possessed by dance… He knows how to build, prune, make choices and find a through-line, which is probably the hardest thing… He knows how to turn his fantasies into a real show, legible, embodied, deeply theatrical… The sacred fire is definitely there.”
ResMusica – 16 December 2025: “The urgency that characterises Martin Harriague’s style hits the mark from the very first image of a show that aims to bring together all the forces of the Avignon house… Energy is spent without restraint… in tableaux of sober, luminous beauty… the fire of youth on stage kindled the fire of youth in the audience.”
ClassiqueNews – 16 December 2025: “An absolutely masterful world premiere! … From the very first seconds, Martin Harriague imposes his signature… Staging and lighting, also by Martin Harriague, create a world of sober beauty.”
Coups d’oeil – 16 December 2025: “Martin Harriague strikes hard from the opening… The choreographer then composes images of a particularly polished aesthetic… Beyond the punishment, optimism triumphs at the end of a beautifully balanced show.”
